The cheapest way to ship from Canada to the US

Anyone offering one carrier name as the answer is comparing rate cards. The real answer is a set of rules, because the winner changes with parcel weight and order value.

The four costs that decide the total

Label rate, including fuel and accessorials. The number everyone compares.

Customs entry fees — brokerage, disbursement or advancement charges for making the entry and fronting duty. Frequently the largest swing factor on low-value parcels.

Duty as actually assessed under that lane’s entry treatment, which is not identical across channels.

Whether your CUSMA claim succeeds on that lane. If qualifying goods get charged duty because the claim did not reach the entry, nothing else in the comparison matters.

Why the ranking flips

Postal and courier channels handle entry differently and price fees differently. That means a lane which is cheapest for a light, low-value parcel can be the most expensive for a heavier, higher-value one, and vice versa.

So a single-carrier decision is always wrong somewhere in your catalogue. The question is whether the part it is wrong for is large enough to matter — which you can only answer by costing your actual shipment mix.

Building routing rules

Cost your real shipments across each lane on all four components. Then group by weight band and order value band and look for where the winner changes.

The output should be implementable in your label tool as conditions: under this value and weight, lane A; above it, lane B. Two or three rules usually capture most of the available saving.

Check the CUSMA component first

Before optimising label rates, verify that your preference claims are actually succeeding on each lane you use. Pull your duty invoices and look for duty charged on goods you believe qualify.

If claims are failing on one lane, fixing that is worth more than any routing change, and it may alter the comparison enough to change your routing decision anyway.

Want this checked against your own numbers?

Label price is one of four numbers that decide what a cross-border order costs you. Brokerage, duty treatment and how reliably CUSMA gets claimed are the others. LaneWise compares carriers on the total, per order, using your own shipment data.
